I'm not talking about the crew cab ram in comparison to the RCSB F150, I'm not that dense. I'm talking about the crew cab ram vs crew cab f150 (both 2017). The Ram rides better, and it's not even close. And for the record, the ram is smaller with a 140.5" wheelbase and 229" overall length, while the F150 has 145" wheelbase and 231.5" overall length. So no, wheelbase has nothing to do with ride quality difference, it's the suspension. Granted, you lose some payload capacity, but I don't load my truck down with heavy loads, so that wasn't a concern for me.
I also find that my '14 rides better than the NBS F-150's. The Dodge I drove back in 2015 did have a nice ride, but we have good roads around here so it wasn't the best comparison. Payload is generally lower on the Rams, but even when you load up a smaller load, they tend to squat. Give and take, but like you say it comes down to the individual's needs.
Wheelbase really does help ride, the longer the better when comparing like make/model. If the OP is looking at "extended cabs", I did prefer the rear door opening of the Rams vs. the Ford.
