Anyone touching up there trucks, some colors are easier than others. My truck is black. I work in a high end collision center, what worked for me was I took straight black paint put in a mixing cup. I added a few drops of Hardner to the paint so it will dry. Make the surface is dry, wax free and debris free of dirt. I used a touch up brush and filled the scratches. Once the touch up paint was dry I wet sanded it flat and color sanded it to a high gloss. Colors that have metallics are harder for a perfect match but will protect the surface. So any touch up will hide it but not a prefect repair.

Could you do the same things with touch up paint? And would you have to cover it with clear afterwards?

I would use a clearcoat if you can get it from a parts store. I get me paint from work. I've suggested to customers to use finger nail clearcoat. Some have a yellowish tint. If your putting it on a dark surface I don't think it will show like applying it to light colors. This cheaper than paying for a paint job
