Default Rear Gears?

I have a 98 F150 XLT ext. cab with the 4.6, 4wd, and manual trans. I have 265/75's on it. I would like to be able to tow a little more weight and get a little better mpg than the current 10 that I'm getting. I'm not expecting anything crazy but would like a little more. Not 100% sure which gears are in it now. But i was wondering which would be the best gears to swap to in order to achieve both objectives. Any info would be a help. Thanks.

check the patch in your driver side door jam and tell me the axle code. it should be a letter and a number but its def gonna be 2 digits. that way we can start with a baseline

thats a 3.55 with a limited slip. thats about as good as it gets dude. you could upgrade to 3.73s or 4.11s but it wouldnt really be cost effective. the ones you have already are gonna give you the best gas mileage out of the three and the 4.11s would be best for towing. and remember it being a 4x4, if you regear you have to do front and rear

That's more or less what I was thinking but I wasn't sure. Thanks for the info. Would the going back to the stock tires have any affect on my performance? The stocks are 235/70R16 and I have 265/75 on it now.

the 235s are like 29s and the 275s are 31s. your engine rpm will be slightly higher with the 235s at highway speed. if your looking for better mpgs change out the plugs and fuel filter, and keep the oil changes in check. try that out and drive with a lighter foot and youll be suprised at how much you mpgs change
