Default rear differential issues

i got a 93 f150 4.9l 4x4 and i am swapig gears from 3.08 to 3.55 ls. right now one of the bearing shims broke when i was taking it out of the junkyard. i got the whole axle to swap out. right now i cannot get the middle pin out to pop the axles out. the bolt that holds the pin in is rounded. how do i get this out. it is 8mm size and i dont know if they make the stripped bolt extractor socket that size. i was thinking about using a cheap socket and welding it to the bolt. how else would i get it out? i was thinkingof using a little heat on the carrier, i will clean out all of the oil first tho. and some of the gears on the ring gear are a little rusted. how do i fix this?

They do make a rounded bolt head extractor. Try that first. Here is a link to Stanley but Sears also sells them. http://news.thomasnet.com/fullstory/...d-bolts-475371

yeah i went to sears with a friend and thought about those i just didnt know if they made one that small but they did. got a set for 9.99 on sale. used it it kept slipping off then it finally came off. it was a tight fit wher i needed it but it worked. now i poped the axles off and one of them has rust on them. should i use it or should i use ones on my truck?

what i did is jacked the backend up and spun the tires and only one tire spins so one of the springs poped off on the carrier. i know i put them in right. or maybe i didnt...
where do those rings go on the carrier? i spun the gears many of times to befor i installed the axle to make sure the ls worked

how do I get the rear axles out of a 1991 F150, 4X4, 5.8 V8. I think the rear differential cover needs to be removed, and the axle retaining clips need to be removed proir to removing the axles; is this correct?

you are correct. what you do is
1. remove the diff cover
2. their is like a pin about the size of a thumb in the carrier gears
3. rotate gears until you see a bolt on the side of the carrier and un do that and the pin should slide out( you can take tires off if you want to, i would suggest doing it)
4. push the axles in and spin a little and you should hear the clip drop out.

Those rings are the differential pinion gear thrust washers. They go between the pinion gear and the differential case.

on the front diff assembly what should i use for a seal red or black permatex?
