Re gear and traction help
My 03 f150 with 100k miles needs to be regeared because it sucks off road. It has 35x12.50's that it can barely spin in the mud, it shifts out of 1st at about 38MPH, on the highway it's running 1700RPMs @65MPH. It has a stock 3.73 LS that I am getting changed to 4.56 unless those of you smarter than I have a better idea.
I figure while it is getting regeared, now is the time to put a locker (or something else) in if I'm going to do it. The truck is mostly an off road hunting truck used on snowy and muddy roads, but my wife does drive it on the highway quite often as well. To sum it up I want the maximum traction at the lowest cost while maintaining on road handling (enough so hat my wife can still drive it)... impossible? What would you do? ARBs front and back? open front autolocker back? limited slip front autolocker back?
Some of my thoughts:
1-I'm not sure if a locker in the front is a good idea, where no slipping is allowed it could cause other parts to break on the not incredibly strong front end?
2-It gets driven on snowy and slick roads at times so limited slip or locker in the front makes me nervous with it locking when trying to turn.
3-full locker in the rear isnt as bad as on the front but with my wife driving it I'm not sure thats a good idea.
4-I'm not sure limited slip is worth it in the rear, if I'm already spending the money I'm not sure I want to go limited slip... and if I do is it worth it to just rebuild the stock limited slip that is mostly worn out at this point?
5-At this point I'm leaning towards selectable lockers front and back (If I can keep from braking things in front). Everyone loves ARB, but they are pricey and I dont like the idea of the airlines and am not sure where I'll put the compressor. ELockers seem a lot more simple but I dont like the way they work... it seems easy to chew off teeth since they disengage while changing direction. Any other good options for selectable at a decent price?
