Default quick fixes...i hope..

Hey all! Just got my 05 fx4 truck today. Its 8 degrees out and while driving i get a loud ringing noise. It goes away when i tap on accelerator or the brake, but comes back shortly after.. is this from the cold temps?? Also, i have the console shifter shouldnt the abbreviations be illuminated at night or no? Please help and thank you!

Not sure about the ringing noise but there is a small bulb under the cover of your shifter. The cover just snaps off with a small flat pry tool and a rag so you don't scratch it get in to each corner and pry up it will pop! You will see right on the shifter base there is a small pop out socket just turn it to the left and pull. The bulb just pull out and push a new one in. Ta da light lol good luck on the ringing noise

Funny u mentioned that. My girlfriends explorer does this noise that ive pinned to the idler pulley. I thought this was it as well. But it is very high pitched. So annoying. Idk if replacing it would do much.

Had a possible similar sound on my 4.0l 07 ranger and my 4.0l 08 sport trac, turned out to be the belt, never heard of the problem with the 5.4l but it's possible, only happened when cold and there was a tsb for changing the belt to a different kind I think is all they did but you might want to call a dealer and ask for sure unless you know how to look tsbs up online(I don't). It wasn't really hurt my ears loud, but it was freaking annoying.
