Default Question on E4OD "limp mode"

I was driving yesterday for maybe a half hour, no problems. I parked my truck for maybe a half hour in front of the local restaurant, and when I left the transmission would shift late and hard at every gear change. Speedometer was workin fine, NO ABS warning light. Today, I pulled codes and got some EGR code, an 02 monitor code (I'll worry bout those later) and a P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor code.

Alright, no problem thinks me... there must be 2 sensors. One for ABS/speedo, one for the EEC (PCM) and since I know where the ABS sensor is, I'll pull it and see if it feeds the speedometer too. Unplugged the sensor on top of the rear differential... got no speedo and an ABS warning. Great! Now, where's that other sensor for the EEC?

Looked all around the tranny and transfer case, and can't find it. Checked on the net, and apparently there is only ONE speed sensor (the one on top of the differential) and this signal goes to the PSOM (speedometer), which then sends it to the EEC. Now, of course I'll start checkin for loose/corroded wire connections, but my question is could the PSOM fail and not send the speed signal to the PCM, yet still operate the speedometer gauge??
