What kind of damage would you cause. I know it would damage the tcc solenoid in automatic, what kind of damage would occur in a manual?

Throwing a vehicle in reverse while careening forward down the highway is one of those things legends are made of, and a sport reserved for Darwin Award candidates.

On a manual, the gears will not synchromesh, so if the transmission allows you to try, it will grind like crazy until you either give up or have nothing left to grind. You would probably want to drain and replace the transmission oil on a manual if you ground the gears for more than a brief moment.

If an automatic allowed you to do it, it's anybody's guess what would happen, but blown solenoids, burned up friction clutches, and a demolished torque converter bouncing along down the highway spilling transmission fluid everywhere sounds plausible. The hydraulic pressures and heat involved would be spectacular. I'd be rather surprised if modern automatics allow such a shift to happen. But if they do, the outcome won't be pleasant. However, Google seems to think it's not possible:

"Modern Ford (and most modern automatic transmissions) are designed with a reverse inhibit feature that prevents the vehicle from shifting into reverse while moving forward at a speed that would be harmful to the transmission. Trying to shift into reverse while moving forward at speed will likely result in the car ignoring the request or going into neutral until the vehicle slows down to a safe speed."

That being said, please don't try. In the off chance the transmission does allow the shift to happen, the outcome is going to be expensive and possibly harmful to other drivers on the road dealing with a car in an out-of-control situation sharing the road with them.

We have many black strips up here from dimwits doing the same, might be just one dimwit if it's who I think it is.
Anyway, the Popo's used to be trained to do just that, both forward and reverse. You've seen it on some dramatized car chases, etc. But it is a real life thing.
Would I do it? Nope, ain't gonna happen.
