Same thoughts here. I bought a 5.0, SCrew, 4x4, FX4, 302A, tow package, 3.55 locking, sport appearance for $37k. TrueCar said $39k was an great deal. I still don't think that $37k is the best that could have been done but they didn't give me any crap about it so I went with it. I think the issue is that the majority of the trucks on dealership lots had a bunch more packages on the window sticker... max tow, tailgate step, blah blah blah, and I don't think TrueCar distinguishes between them very well. I think it mainly looks at engine, cab, and drivetrain and beyond that they're all the same.
TrueCar is a tool, just like any other, but I do think it is one of the better ones.

If I was buying from a dealer in the next county I'd try to get every last cent out of him. But I like to buy from my local guy. I push hard for a good deal, show him the offers I've received from True Car and let him sell it for $200 or $300 over the best offer. It's not worth it to me to drive 50-75 miles each way, for several trips, to get a deal done. And my small town dealer is a happy guy who treats me really well.
I do my homework and I'm not a push over but the best deal, and the best relationship, begins when you're both happy. And, since my local guy will be doing all the service on it over the next many years, he's going to treat me a lot better than if I had bought it elsewhere and brought it to him for service. That, in itself, is worth the $200-$300 extra that I spent on the truck.
I once bought five cars in less than a year from the same Ford Dealer. When I walked in the door they treated me REALLY good!

Dealer is going to add $250 back to any any negotiated deal if you use TRUECAR. Its how TrueCar makes their money. They have access to the dealers systems.
