pulling someone out of a ditch
I have a fx4 5.4L V8 and with front tow hooks and was wondering if I were to help someone get out of a ditch would it be better to tow them out in reverse or somehow connect the straps to the rear of my truck and pull them out? Thanks.
i always prefer to hook up the rear of my truck and drive forward while pulling someone out. You can use your trailer hitch, but get a tow hook or d-ring shackle mount to put into the hitch, never use a drop hitch or trailer ball as an attachment point.
The weight transfer and traction will be much in your favor when pulling forward. When you pull in reverse, you are unloading the rear suspension, and with little or no weight in the bed you will likely experience axle wrap (wheel hop) which can be quickly devastating to u joints, axleshafts, etc.
When pulling forward, if you have a cross bed toolbox, open the lid to protect the back window (and your head) in case something breaks. Likewise, if pulling in reverse, pop the hood open to protect the windshield, assuming you aren't bouncing around too much.
If using the front hooks, it is best to attach both sides to spread the load evenly, but thats not always possible or practical. And i know you said straps, but of course, NEVER USE CHAINS!!!!!!

thanks for the advice fellows. I have seen videos with people being pulled out both ways, so I was curious to see which be safer and healthier for the truck. If I purchase the d-ring shackle mount or tow hook all I have to do is take out my ball hitch and put either one of those in its place?

I dont know if there is really a science to this, i think its more of an opinon thing, but pulling from the rear makes more sense to me for the same reason as it keeps weight on your rear wheels which is where more of your power comes from right???
I have pulled someone out from the front simply because it was easier in the situation, but I just pulled a jeep out of a foot of snow from the rear for no apparent reason, didnt think about pullin in, would have been a hell of a lot easier though now that I think about it lol.
And if you have a ball on your bumper, my 05 stx told me that is where I should pull my self out from as long as I was not royally screwed...Did it several times with no problems. But on my dads old 97 i think, he did that and yanked the whole bumber off! Point of the story, read the manual...I might go out there right now and read it to see what it says about the front hooks...I guess they are there for a reason arent they?

That is a very good point dp and chad about the suspension loading. I prefer not to pull on my bumper and hitch assembly is the reason I use the front and I have more power, control and visual presence over what I am doing. And of course no chains!
