Default Pulling a horse trailer

I have a 05 150 with a 4.6 liter engine. It doesn't have the trailer towing package. I was wondering what else I will have to put on the truck other then a hitch and plug?

Trailer brake controller for sure. How big is the trailer? You might wanna put a tranny cooler on too. Horse and livestock trailers can get pretty damn heavy.

Not sure how much the trailer weighs, Looking at a 2 horse featherlite. Will put a tranny cooler on it, My 86 had 2 shocks on the front as part of the trailer package. Is there a difference in springs and shocks on the trailer package on the o5?

I agree - gotta have the brake controller if your hauling a horse trailer in a half ton. The 05 has a bit beefer spring but I don't think it would be worth worrying about as long as you don't go over 5,500 # on the trailer.

How big are those horses? Average horse comes in around 1000, but a regular horse can be up to 1400, depending on height. Are you planning to do a bumper pull or gooseneck? Congrats!

^not just a great idea, its necessary and full size trailers like you are getting. If you don't have you you will burn off the brakes on your truck extremely quick. Just a 2 place don't even worry about different springs or anything like that, the cooler and controller and you will be set. You might feel a bit low on power with the 4.6 but it'll work fine.

Speaking of horse trailers . . .

I am the proud (new) owner of an 08 F150 5.4L V8 extended cab.

In my reading, I've read that the towing capacity on these trucks can vary from 5000 to 11000lbs. So my question is where can I find a definitive answer? Or how can I figure it out myself?

Any help would be appreciated.

In the process of looking for a horse as well, The horse will be about 16.2 hands. It will be a bumper pull. Trying to get the truck ready before any purchases.
