I am going to be buying a new truck in the spring and I am doing the research now. I was thinking about a Ford Lariat with the eco-boost. I want something to pull a travel trailer. I am looking for gas milage and towing power (isn't everyone?). The eco-boost seemed like the answer. Should I look esewhere?

BTW, I am also looking at the GMC SLT with the 5.3.
The EB is Ford's premier F150 engine. If I remember correctly, you can't get the Screw with the Lariat trim only as an Ecoboost. Ford is also developing a 2.5L turbocharged V6 for the F150 as well.

I like GM trucks, but really only as a 3/4 ton. In my experience, GM's and Dodges take farm and ranch abuse much better than F150's but that is also a regional observation. I don't know from experience what the 5.3 Vortec makes. I know my grandfathers 2011 Ram 1500 Laramie makes 20mpg with the 5.7 Hemi. His old 2002 Ram 1500 Lone Star Edition (Big Horn for those of you who don't live in Texas) made 20 mpg with the 5.9 Magnum after it had the exhaust redone. Trim wise, I don't know anything about GM trims. I can tell you a Lariat and Laramie trim package are the equivalents of one another. I can also say a friend of mine bought a prerelease 2012 Ram 3500 Longhorn Edt. and another one bought a 2011 F350 King Ranch Edt...the Ram came with a 415hp tune on the engine that makes 850 lb-ft of torque with a 300K mile power train warranty and the Longhorn Edt blows the King Ranch out of the water.

get out but for real I would go with the ecoboost the 5.3 is a descent engine put its torque is lacking to say the least if your going to go gm for some unknown reason at least get the 6.2 but then were back to the whole chevy v. ford thing because the ford 6.2 is better than the chevy hp and torque wise

Bad choice. Sure its a decent engine up to about 40k miles. Then on 07+ 5.3's, its oil leak galore. No joking here, i've been under several hundred if not over a thousand 07+ 5.3 trucks, I have changed oil and done the inspections for 4 years. Well over 80% of then have oil leaks, and quite a few are pretty serious like main engine seals. Just not a long lasting motor by any means. 07 are notorious for cams going bad and big repair, 08 and 09 burn oil like crazy enough for the low oil light to come on between changes, and all up to this point have lots of leaks and tranny output shaft seal goes bad usually within the first 20k.

If buying a new half, an Ecoboost or 5.7 Hemi is one of the best choices. If you want even better mileage, buy a Common Rail 5.9 Cummins or a LBZ 6.6 Duramax with all of the emissions deleted and a 500hp tune. If you want to rival a EB mileage wise...buy a 6.4 PSD.
