Sounds like you have air in the system. You may have to bleed it, did you pull any hoses off? Maybe you have a kinked line?

Thanks acdii. Actually I havent had any house disconnected nor any kinked line. I did had to seat the steering column when replacing heater core. When replacing the column back I had to pull up about 2 inches in order to have the steering wheel bolted.

I'm curious why the steering stopped working by just removing the shaft from the gear box. Is this rack and pinion, or the old style gear box and tie rods.

Thanks acdii, but that question is beyond my knowledge. I have never had to deal with power steering issues on all my previous cars, so I'm not able to answer that question.

that truck has a gear box not rack and pinion. sounds like you are low on power steering
fluid. top it off and retest it. probably a coincedence and has a leak. this is how a lot of
techs get screwed out of money, when they fix something and something else happens,
they get the blame and usually have to fix it for free.

Wanna hear a good one? Back when I was working at a Ford dealer we had a customers van in for a coolant leak, turned out to be the water pump. Customer picks up her van and goes home, about 30 mins later she comes back raising a royal fit that we broke her radio. Service manager knew the two had nothing to do with each other and so did the dealer owner but being a small town and the woman's husband was friends with the owner they replaced her radio for free.
