Default PCV Valve

I have a F150 5.4l 3V F x 4 with 140,000 miles on it, I was wondering if anyone could school me on what the PCV valve is and what role does it play in my engines health. Also does it need replaced and how will I know if mine needs replaced or is just something that just needs done. I appreciate your time. Thanks

I worked at a quick lube place and when we pulled them, if it didnt rattle nicely, we would recommend spending the $6 for a new one.

It's my understanding that a Positive Crankcase Vent valve draws fuel vapor from inside the engine back to be introduced to the fuel system to be burned. As was stated, if the the little ball doesn't rattle, it has become stuck and is actually trapping those vapors in the engine. The vapors turn back into liquid as the engine cools and mixes with the oil, slowly turning your oil into a solvent. Very bad. $6 to prolong oil and engine life? That's a bargain! Keep it clean!

Pat is right man.... Treat it like your co**. Rattle it like youre 14 again.lol

I thought the pcv valve ran on vacuum? Lol

Anyways, if it dont rattle... You can try sinking it in a bowl of gas or spray the heck out of it with brake clean.
