Default Overheating,No power

Hello all!
I have a 1987 from F150 with a 300cdi 6 cylinder. My son was driving down the highway when it lost power. He got off highway and truck was overheating. I got there, the truck was cold, filled rad. and tried to start. Ran bad and stalled, but with a shot of either into the (EFI) air intake the truck would run. I got in and by working the gas peddle was able to get the truck moving. The temp shot up but if I got some spead up(45+ would not go over 55 no real power) the temp would go down to a little above normal. Got home, stop truck, massive overheat. exhaust pipes red hot. In the morning started truck wanted starting fluid to run, after about 5 min truck started to overheat. Going to try to unbolt the exhaust system(1987 fun fun fun)
Anyone have ideas?

Take the thermostat out, maybe... sounds like a blockage somewhere.

Is you clutch fan working?
