Question Opinion on electrical problem

Have a weird electrical problem on my 1999 F-150 4x4 crew cab: Battery was dead, recharged and tested, o.k. Got in to start and noticed that battery light was on and amp guage showed charging without key being in ignition. Got out to look underhood (key off and in my poicket) Reached down to test tension on drive belt and engine suddenly started cranking, resulting in a large chunk being taken out of my knuckle (glad engine didn't start). Removed cables and waited a while then put back on. After a few seconds, started to crank again without key on (or in switch). I suspect a bad ignition switch but know little about electrical systems. Anyone have any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
