Default oil weight need help

theirs an oil sticker on my windshield its Pennzoil and it says 15w 40 that is a grade for diesel oil not regular gasoline engine oil the guy that had it before me had a 5th wheel in the back of the truck and its only a f-150 he had it registered as a 3/4 ton so i dropped it down to it's normal class... i know you need protection because its a v-8 but thats a little crazy... manual says 5w 30 what do you think i should run in it the rest of the time..

If it is a 4.6 or 5.4 run 5-20 NOT 5-30. The lighter oil takes care of a lot of lifter noise and just works better in general. Ford has updated all 4.6 and 5.4 to 5-20 even the pre 2002 models.

It has a higher Zinc content than regular oil in which Zinc has been removed from to help with catalytic converter problems other than that it will be ok. Also if you are running a flat tappet hydraulic cam they recommend you run a Zinc additive anyway to help on lope and lifter wear.

I would stick to the type of oil the engine has normally had in it. I work for a construction co. , working with both small to large gas engines and small to large . All I use is 15w-40, it works fine for all years models up to 2009.

i dont see why to put that thick oil on the engine..... 5w20 its the one for most of the f150 engines... 14w40 seems awful heavy... some people put heavier oil in their engines because of faulty rings or pistons to try to avoid the engine to smoke...

now if you are located in the middle of the dessert, a heavier oil could help to keep the engine colder. but 5w20 its good for florida and texas.... so, i mean sahara...
