Default odometer possessed

Bought 2001 f150 ext cab 4.6l with 101,000 miles on it...saw it...read it...recorded this in memory...then today after changing fuel pump a few days ago...I noticed odometer reading 299,990 miles. Am I crazy...or is this
something that can actually be done. Trucks in great shape...sure don't look like 300,000...checked carfax...sure enough 299,976. This itself is odd because the odometer reads 299,996 right now and I've put at least 100 maybe 120 miles on it since I bought it. 20 miles since I bought it is not remotely possible. It was more than 20 miles simply to get home after purchasing it. So, any insights...I'm baffled at how this was done. Please let there be some possible explanation or my heads just gonna explode.

Sounds like the last owner doctored the miles

Possibly a new cluster? I know when you change a cluster at a dealership you are supposed to program in the correct miles(I know this is true on medium duty and heavy duty trucks) maybe they switched it out and the ECM corrected it?????? I don't know if that is even possible with a light duty truck. Just thinking out loud.

Thanks, that's the scenario I find most probable too. Now to verify I'll call a couple dealerships.

Did it show 101xxx when you went to look at it, but went back another day to pick it up?

Wondering if the owner changed the cluster in between?

Still doesn't explain the CarFax though.. head scratcher for sure!
