Good old cracked coil housing. See this all the time with old motorcycles.

I used to get bad coil units all the time with my Grand Am as well. Once it starts to ground out the spark or primary side, it'll do all sorts of screwed up things.

Gotta say that's a first for me, never seen one burn thru like that, usually it's a burn thru the rubber boot.
