There is a possibility you wrecked something doing it wrong if you get grinding, cause I never hear grinding, take it in and ask your dealer to check it out and teach you how to shift it correctly if you don't believe me.
Read my post above straight from MY owners manual!! So, just so I understand you correctly, the 2012 Ford F150 manual is wrong, & you're right??? I didn't "wreck" anything on my truck, & I see no reason for you getting pissy about it either!!

I'm just trying to help ya and youre calling me a liar basically, like I said try it when moving and report back. If it still grinds something is broke, simple.just checked my manual and it says nothing about shifting to 4hi when stopped, it says at any forward speed. Guess they changed it for 12, but trust me, do it when moving with foot off the gas it will work better.

We had some ice earlier this year and I have an incline to my driveway,I put the truck in 4H while sitting still and could barely hear it engage.I'd definitely have it checked out,but like you said they probably won't be able to replicate it.If you're not supposed to sit still and engage eventually we'll all be up the sht creek without a paddle.

It will still engage if you're sitting still, it will just make more noise and be harder on the parts because it won't actually engage until things start turning. If you turn it on while moving its just a whole lot quieter and smoother, try it, you will see, but remember, foot off the gas!

Yeah I totally agree with you Sultan but if the OP's gears are grinding that's kinda out of the ordinary, especially to be doing it continuously after trying it different ways.

Not taking sides here but in 40 years of 4wd Ive had plenty of vehicles that would not engage 4wd high sitting still. Seen lots of stuck people in the snow after work where they got snowed in and the 4wd wouldnt engage till the moved.

Its a straight up fact, at least on my 2010. All you have to do is try it, switch to 4hi sitting still and then hit the gas, i guarantee you will feel the back tires spin before you hear a clunk and the front ones lock in and start pulling. People love to hate me, but I speak the truth. Now if you have a 2012 lariat or higher trim lvl with the auto 4x4 and AWD feature it will be different, but if you have the standard transfer case that fully locks I am 100% correct. All you have to do is try what I tell you and even the most novice driver should be able to feel the difference. But I do agree that the grinding is not normal, weather it be a manufacturing defect or damage cause from improper shifting is up for debate, but the bottom line is that its not normal unless you are shifting to 4 high while stopped and then flooring it and not allowing it time to shift properly because it is designed to shift while moving.
