Default MPG drop

I traveled to Pittsburgh Pa from SW Virginia over this past weekend and I got about 17.4 MPG on the way up and 15.2 on the trip back.

I made the trip to Pitt. right after I got the truck and got about 18 MPG.
What would cause the drop? BTW I made a 2500 mile trip and averaged 19.5 MPG for the trip right after I got the truck

I have a 2011 Lariat super crew with ecoboost and 3.73.

I plan to go talk to the service manager this week.

Pete

if your that worried about mileage in a truck, then trade it in for a focus. just because the little sticker on the truck when you bought it says its rated for that mileage, does not mean you are going to get that.

and do the mileagae calculations yourself, dont go by the computer on your truck.

When did you make the first trip? Winter fuel?

I have found that many things can cause my mileage to vary. Most noticebly is a head or crosswind. That will lose me as much as 3 mpg's sometimes. As noted the winter blend gas sucks too. These are big old wind blocks with four wheels. Probably nothing to worry about.

Altitude, winter blend gas as it's about the time gas stations are switching over, crosswinds, there's a large variety of factors that could do it. I wouldn't worry about it.

And just fyi, the fuel estimator calculator in the trucks can be off by 2 to 3 mpg too. Best way is to just clear your trip meter when fill up and next time divide number of miles drives vs gallons to full again.

I would normally agree with the winter-blend comment, but not anymore, at least not in Maryland. We used to have normal, non-ethanol gas in the spring-summer-fall and a 10% ethanol mix in the winter. Now, we have 10% ethanol mix all year round. Really sucks with the reduced mpg's from the damned ethanol... I used to get 18+ mpg on the highway with my 5.8L 4x4, but not anymore.

I too find my mileage can vary by quite a bit from tank to tank. Agree also with the winter gas working against you. Also some of the gas stations you filled up at could have been a 10% ethanol blend, while some may have been 100% gas so that could explain the mileage differences too.

I appreciate your consertive comments but I am afraid a Focus would not pull my camper or utility trailer.

I did the calculations myself. I bought gas at 4 different stations. I made the last trip in October. I don't know if they started the winter blend then.
I could only find 10% ethanol on all 4 tanks. We have to really search for 100% in this area.

I talked to the service manager and he told me to moniter it for a couple of tanks for the same reasons you guys gave me. If no improvement then he will check it out.

Thanks, Pete
