I have used K&N drop in filters and synthetic oil in a number of vehicles and never saw any improvement in fuel milage with them either.

I don't know about my new ford but on my 04 ram with the 4.7, the air filter is the same all the way up to the 8.0 litre v-10. So, if the filter will flow enough for the v-10 it will flow more than enough for my 4.7. Good fuel economy is a great selling point for any full sized pick up, so don't you think if a cold air intake offered any noticable difference in fuel economy Ford would find it cost effective to make them standard.

My point? Save your money for gas. You bought a full sized truck with a powerful v8 engine, your not going to get great fuel economy. Take care of your truck and adjust your driving habbits, thats the best way to get the best possible milage.
No hell from me. I completely agree.

Is that an Excel spreadsheet that you use?

+1^ I don't see how a K&N filter could improve gas mileage enough to be able to calculate the difference. As to Ford and CAI, they have used them on their Rangers for quite some time. My 03' Ranger 4x4 3.0 with 4.10's had cold air from the factory, but very little power and got terrible gas mileage. My 4.6 gets better mpg then it did. I bought my f150 expecting full sized truck gas mileage and I'm not disappointed.

Yes. You can download the original at:

I modified it slightly to compare the truck MPG with the calculated.

Thank you. I like this better than the one I have been using.
You sure get gas frequently

Thanks again,
Bob

No hell from me either. I actually wish I would have seen your post prior to some of the changes I had made. A little history here. This is the first Ford truck I have owned. My previous 2 trucks have been GMC Sierra's. I actually was looking at them this time too but just could find what I was looking for. Decided to look at the F-150 and was very impressed so I purchased.

My last truck had the chip, exhaust and CAI. I will say that on that truck the chip really worked well. So i figured I would try it on this one. There is a difference performance between the two trucks. But i think it was more a matter of me getting used to the 6 speed tranny. Now that I have some miles on the truck I have no complaints.

For me I still would but the 40 series on the truck only because i like the sound it give the truck. I will say that on my truck and I do live in the lovely state of California, that on my air box assembly there are 4 or 5 air chambers on the assembly. The K&N CAI really did make a difference. I actually had a friend of mine with the same truck drive mine today. He is going to purchase this CAI.

I drive about 2500 miles a month so if I can squeeze a couple mpg out of the truck i will try. I dont drive hard and I am still very happy with my truck. Really drives nice, comfortable leather bucket seats and a good sound system. I am a happy camper.

For those that bought BRAND new, how long did it take to see decent mileage? I've had mine (2010 FX4 SCREW) only a few weeks with just under 3000km (canadian) and almost exclusive highway driving. So far the best i've done is 13.8mpg with an average of 13.1 over 3000km.

I know break-in will change this, but I hope it doesn't take too long. Anyone got numbers?

At least 5000 miles and remember we're in winter (2-3 MPG drop).

I have a 2010 FX4 5.4L and my milage started at about 12.8. Now that it has 9000 miles on it the milage is coming up. It's now at 15.4. All this driving is on mountain roads in the Smokys. Hang in there.
