Go after anything that increases torque more than power. More torque will get you accelerating faster. Mario Andretti once said, "Horsepower sells cars, torque wins races."

I have a 4.2 which makes 202 hp. If you know about parasitic loss than you know you loose about 20% of your power in an automatic drivetrain and about 10% in a standard drivetrain. I have the standard which puts 182hp to the rear wheels where the automatic version puts about 162hp to the rear. You would think that a stock 4.2 5 speed would win agains a stock 4.2 4 speed (auto) every time but you would be dead wrong. Because the auto's gears are much more evenly spaced, the torque band of the engine is applied more evenly to each gear while the 5 speed's gears are not evenly spaced and the torque band it applied more narrowly.
