Default missing oil

I know I posted about this before but for those who may not have seen it I'll give you a quick run down. The dealer has always done my oil about a month-month and half ago ruffly & 3000 miles I decided to do my own oil change after draining just under 4 quarts (I poured oil into a empty 1 gallon jug of milk and did not fill) out of 7 and no more oil to be found I suspected the dealer had only put in 4 qrts.I contacted them to let them know of course they denied any wrong doing well it appears my speculations were wrong. I just checked my oil today and the dipstick is showing very little if any oil I know I put in 7 qrts, I would think if there was no oil the truck would be letting me know. I've had no warning lights no knocking and the oil guage is showing good pressure I'm confused by this and it makes NO sense, I am planning on calling the dealer tomorrow to set up an appointment to have this checked out,but I was wondering if any body else has had a similar problem.

Rule-of-thumb is that the oil filter will hold about a quart. Assuming (?) you didn't drain the oil filter contents into the jug - that gets you up to just short of 5 quarts.

Suggest that if you're not leaking it, you're burning it somehow. 2 quarts in 3000 miles (or 3 quarts, if you did drain the filter into the jug) is on the high to very high side for consumption.

For further info - motor and miles??

This is certainly something to further investigate - keep us posted on what you find.

Always check your oil frequently and you may notice a gradual loss by what you see on the dipstick and ALWAYS check your oil level after having someone else check your oil.

I have found a bad PCV valve to suck oil away into the intake.

On your 07' you are wasting money changing oil every 3K miles, but then it's your money.

You'll always get less out then what went in. It's like that every time.

3 quarts less in 3000 miles I've never had any vehicle burn 3 quarts in 3000 miles. I have appointment with dealer they said they are going to do a oil consumption test on it but they did say which I'm having a hard time believeing that these trucks can burn upto a quart for every thousand miles

I asked a dealer one time about the 5.4s and oil consumption and the answer floored me. He told me that Ford did not consider anything more than a qt per 1000 miles to be excessive. My 2001 has consumed about a qt every 1500 - 2000 since new. I really did not notice when I was changing oil every 3000 and by the time I switched to every 5k it was out of warranty. I heard from a Ford tech that some 5.4s were prone to high consumption and he said that his dealership had swapped some under warranty. Someone stated that you are wasteing money changing every 3k and I totally agree with modern engines and oil. My brother in law has a new truck that somehow measures how dirty the oil is and he goes 6k easily.

One other thing is to make sure that you are using a filter with a back flow valve. I have always used the 820S.

Here is some info:
I work in a fleet environment looking after some 700 ford vehicles. Here is what I see happening in our fleet the 5.4l engine and the 6.8L v10 seem to develop a oil consumpption problem at about 50k we have run several engines out of oil completely, down to engine seized. We change oil at 4000KM intervals and these units sometimes cannot make the next oil change.
For what its worth we do not expreince this problem with the 4.6L engines.

Yes Ford says that a liter in a 1000kms or 600 miles is ok and not reason for concern. My personal 2000 F150 with the 5.4 will go about 3000km in a liter of oil and has been this way since I purchased it at 80,000km. I have changed to Castrol Syntec, no change in oil consumption. My previous f150 was a 1991 with a 5L engine it had 300,000km and did not use this much oil.

This problem seems to be inherent to the larger cu.in. engine, Ford does not have an answer for us and we are a pain in their side as with a large fleet of this size we cannot be ignored however no answer yet!!

also worth mentioning we do not have oil consumption problems till the mileage gets to say 30,000 miles or so when new there seems to be less problem.

3 valve and 2 valve engines semm to have the same problem!!
