Default Mercon V M50D-R2?

Hey,
The manual tranny in my 98 is in need of service again. Instead of using Mercon III could I swap in Mercon V? I really want to go synthetic but can't afford it so I was thinking of using Mercon V which is, from what I have heard, synthetic Mercon. Would this help with shifting and tranny whine when it's cold? I live in Minnesota so I want something a little more temperature tolerant than plain ol' Mercon III.

It wil work fine. I ran Merc 5 in my Ranger for a dozen years. It will work the same as Merc 3. Any noises you have now, you'll have after you switch.

Thanks for the reply! I am hoping the synthetic fluid will be more cold weather tolerant as it can get down to 40 below here.

Well the Mercon V does everything I wanted it too. Smoother shifting, quieter in the cold. Feels like new.
