Default merc mountaineer

ive got a 02 mercury mountaineer, i know this is a f150 forum but you guys know fords pretty good, its throwing the code for the egr valve, its been for about 2 years now, cant figure out why, everything to do with the egr has been replaced, and also every now and then the OD light will flash, it all started after a move and i towed a 8x10 trailer about 20 miles 3 or 4 times with a full load, is this saying the trans is overheating or is it something major, im a honda guy, but ive recently opened up a full service auto shop and my partner knows domestics really well but its got him stumped as well, all i can think of is that the trans is getting overheated, but occasionaly with normal driving around town, the light will flash, theres no difference in how it shifts or drives but the light flashing just doesnt seem right. oh btw, this is a 02 all wheel drive with a 4.6 motor, the motor blew a rod at 85k so its been replaced and the passenger rear coil spring broke in half about 20k after that so the motor and the rear springs have been replaced, the trans has been flushed in the last 20k miles and everything else is factory stock

Do you have a transmission code scanner? The trans threw a code and you need to scan it to find out exactly what it is. What EGR code did the EEC scan? Did you replace the DPFE? Finally, how in the hell did you kill the first motor in your mountaineer? I put a Mountaineer motor in my car about two years ago and beat on it everyday.

Take the egr tube loose at the intake. Run a wire in that passage and see if its stopped up. This is if you replaced the DPFE sensor. If its stopped up there is your problem..Need to scan the tranny to see what code is being thrown. Cant help till we know the code.

ya i been meaning to scan it, but havnt got a chance yet, havnt really done anything with it lately, i did replace the DPFE sensor a few months ago and the code went away for about a day, i cant remember what code it was when i scanned it the second time, my main concern is the trans, i bought the truck new and its always kind of shifted hard, and now its got like a stutter in it when going from second to third, like its shifting 5 or 6 times before it gets into the gear, i was gonna do another flush on it but its a closed system and i dont have the tool to add fluid, it seems that the OD light will flash when im towing something or after a long haul on the highway (4 or 500 miles), i was just wondering if from it flashing is a way of saying its overheating because thats what it seems like, while towing a heavy trailer it will flash and light will stay constant and then if i shut it down and let it cool the light doesnt come back, so hopefully its still stored in there so i can pull the code

oh the first motor went out when i towed a car on a dolly from NC to FL and a couple days later it was knocking and the culprit was a broken rod, never really investigated, just threw another motor in it and ever since its had the EGR code
