Default Mechanics book hours for labor info?

Hey guys. So where do mechanics and dealer ships get their hours from for a particular job.
Is there some secret website? lol
Do they just make it up themselves?
Where can I find this info?

My dealer used the latter and is also what I use at my home business.

ALLDATA

The bad part about book hours is often they are not representative of the amount of time it actually takes to fix or replace a part.

Ford also produces a list of labor times that dealerships are required to use for warranty work. That list isn't used for much else because the numbers are so low. But most of the lists are proprietary, and only available by $ub$cription. So in that sense, yes: it's a secret website. If you're friendly with any local repair shop or dealership, you can ask them to show you the "book time" for one particular job (that they're NOT about to charge you for), but they're not likely to print you off any pages or let you browse through the lists.

And yes, mechanics & service advisors frequently "make up" the labor time, based on many factors including vehicle age/condition, presence of aftermarket modifications, and unforseeable problems (like rusty/broken bolts). Naturally, some just gouge the customers, but IME, that's rare.

You pay the published times for a job regardless of how fast the mechanic does the job. Example book says front brakes replace and install pads rotors say 3 hrs, mechanic can do it in 1 you pay for 3.
