Default Manuals

Purchased 96 F150 XL 4x4 to fix up. I purchased the Haynes and Chilton manuals, but some of the equipment doesn't seem to be in the books. Case in point is a second cap under the exterior cap (torx screws) on front axle. I can't find it in any book and there are no screws, bolts or rings holding it and I can't figure out how to take it off. My question is how can I tell what kind of equipment my truck has in it. I know the 96 was the end of that version of the f150 and it seems that they put in equipment that is not standard in the manuals. What is the best way to decipher the codes on the data plates. I didn't get any type of user manual with it.
