Default Manual ****

I am trying to remove the **** off of the shifter of my 150 to replace it with something other than stock. I'm twisting it but it's not budging. I am afraid to twist too hard in fear that I will damage something related to the shifter so my questions are as follows:

1) Will I damage my truck by twisting too hard?

2) Is there some trick to doing this that I am not aware of?

3) Do you guys have any suggestions for a cool replacement?

Thanks in advance.

The **** does not screw on. It is pressed on. very tight fit. I know cuz my came off due to previous owner and I had to put it back on. I would say turn it from side to side with a pair of vice grips while pulling up.
