The manual isn't an upgrade to the old auto. The 10 speed auto would be the upgrade.

I just want something with a manual transmission and 4x4. Is that so much to ask?

Why ?

Early slushboxes were weak & unreliable. Modern ones are MUCH stronger than sticks (even the ZF), and shift faster, with the added benefit of torque multiplication in the torque converter (effectively letting them split gears for a few seconds). Since ~'95, most Ford transmission models use the current naming standard, which describes the number of gears, configuration (RWD or transaxle), torque input rating (/10), and possibly letter suffixes for additional features (like "W" for wide-ratio). The Mazdog appeared just before that standard, so that name (M5OD-R2) doesn't describe torque, but I recently found it mentioned in a magazine article as ~320 lb-ft. The ZF model number does describe torque, in the last 2 digits. So the S5-42 is rated for 420, and the S5-47 handles 470 lb-ft.

For comparison, the AODE/4R70W slushbox handles 700 lb-ft, and was considered too weak for the 5.8L, which made less torque than the 4.6L & 5.4L. Now, the EBV6s are making those old smallblock V8s look like bad jokes. So that should give you some indication of how slushboxes have progressed MUCH faster than sticks, which is why Ford is abandoning sticks for trucks - they just can't handle the torque, and they're not popular or efficient enough to justify offering them. It's like solid-rubber tires, carburetors, 8-track tapes, and even CDs - as popular as they each once were, even with some diehard fans who bemoaned their passing, technological advancements have made them irrelevant in new trucks.

This chart shows the early ZF applications:

I hear ya OP. I miss my manual trans every single day....My #1 bucket list item is to put a coyote and 6spd manual in my 2003 RCSB. I've priced all the parts for $18k new ($12k used)....now, I just need to win the lottery......

The Superduty could be had with a manual up to 2010, when ford started offering the 6.7, no more manual.

I have a 5 speed 4x4 4.6 4 door 2003. I think it’s the last year of the v8 4x4 and manual. Love my truck…
