When you want to add additional keys, you must program by having two keys to start with.


My question is this:


When you do the PATS programing, is it actually re programming all 3 keys or is it just checking the first 2 with the system then programs the 3rd key to match the original first 2? so if the 3rd does not work or you screw up, your original 2 still work?

It is just checking the first 2 and then programming the 3rd. Like on Star Trek when Kirk initiates self destruct, Scotty has to say yes, then Chekov has to say yes, then Kirk finalizes it.

 

As Rick already posted it simply receives the new key and adds it to the group, if it doesn't take the original keys are unaffected, now if you go into PATS programming as in having only 1 key then it rewrites all of them.

Thanks all. Successfully programmed a key to hide on the truck. Pretty simple to do, it was only a key with chip no other functions. Now where to hide it!

 

Just curious as to why you are doing this if it is not a working key. Is it to get around remote start or something (there are easier, safer ways to do this now)

 

I temporarily lost my keys the other day. Had I had a hidden key, then no worries. But I ended up finding them.

So I went on ebay and bought an 8040 key for 15 bucks. Had it cut for 4 dollars and now have a key that will start my 13 hidden on it. Took about 10 seconds to program it. Since I have a keypad all I wanted was a working ignition key.

 

got it. Thanks. I might consider doing that also then. Right now when my Dad needs to borrow my truck, I just leave the extra set of keys in the center console and he knows the keypad code.
Has never been a problem, but I also know how easy the locks are to pop on and F150 (at least my 03 was). So your option may be better.

I offered 15.50 and it was accepted. Took all of 15-30 seconds to program. Originally went to Lowes to have it cut, they said no they could not cut against company policy to cut non purchased keys. I asked how much from them, he said about 100 dollars. I said are you kidding, he said no.


Went to a real locksmith, he said 4 dollars no guarantee, I said all I want is for you to cut it so it opens the door, he said "oh it will" and it did. Got to my sons house and a short time later, it was programmed and hidden.
