I would not necessarily say they "explode" unless they are carrying around nitro in the trunk.

However, some cars have been known to catch fire rather easily, such as the pinto. I had a 80 custom deluxe with dual tanks that went up in flames after a t-bone.

You need to watch Myth Busters... They just did an episode where they sent a car off of a cliff... Not a single one exploded unless they intentionally rigged it to.

those were the trucks with the tanks in the bedsides right?
soulds like excellent enginering to me....

wasnt there a bunch of years were GM had problems from side mounted gas tanks?

There were problems, but they were also screwed by the "investigative reporting" staff over at 60 minutes.

They couldn't get it to explode on camera so they put an igniter in the tank, IIRC.

I was going 60MPH one time and hit a bug and it exploded right on the windshield.
