I run 300lbs of sand bags in mine. Right over the rear axle.

I use concrete steps. I had three of them in the back but I took one out. They are about 200 lbs each, so I have 400 lbs.

I have a long bed and short bed, 240lbs (120lbs)above each wheel well is enough on the short bed. The long bed I have about 400lbs and haven't had any issues.

This is what I do in my Mazda....works best, in my opinion. I've had steel scrap and Kirksite ingots, etc in the past but you have to make sure that stuff is secured well or it will slide around and destroy your bed, obviously.
Sandbags can be had for a few bucks each for 60 - 80 lb. bags. The fabric 'tube' versions are only good for a couple of years before they rot but...at the price they cost, you can't beat it. Another BIG benefit is...you can always use the contents of one as traction sand, if you need it.

Snow melts when you don't need it anymore and as long as you don't use dirty snow it kind of rinses out you bed
