12% illegal. Really? laws do not have a gray area. it is legal or illegal not partially illegal.

not 12% illegal. He asked about his 15% tint, how illegal can it really be if he isnt getting stopped.

Well, what is the legal limit for tint? If 15% > legal limit than illegal% = 100.

You might not get stopped for it specifically, but next time you get popped for something else you will likly get an extra violation for the tint.

I think you missed my attempt at sarcasm.

In Wisconsin, where I live, Laws are absolute. Speed limit is 55 that can cite you for 56. They are not required to do so but that can it is discretionary. My point is just that if it is not legal it is fully illegal. There is no partial illegal there is no percent illegal. You may get along just fine until you have a tail light out then you get that a DWI and illegal tint.
What they chose to pinch you on is their option. That’s all.

Every state varies and every cop is different. Here in CO, I believe the darkest you can get is 20%. Typically a cop won't pull you over just for tint, unless say you have your windshield tinted (which is becoming more common). I know when I used to cruise the strip and the cops wanted to clear the streets, they'd use this as an excuse and then get you for multiple infractions. Remember my friend got popped for his tint, a cracked windshield and over-sized tires without enough fender flare or mud flaps.

Here in Bama, im pretty sure the legal limit is 35%, mine are 15% and havent gotten stopped yet. Knock on wood. I think window tint is a secondary violation like a seatbelt ticket, or texting while driving.

ignorance of the law will still get you a ticket, or worse of you commit a worse crime or offense

cops are not my favorite species on this planet.
HOWEVER
they are hard wired to be very cautious approaching you at a traffic stop, lots of cops get killed DEAD from horse's rear ends that feel they can just DO IT.

so its up to you to diffuse the situation and be the person that takes the high road, even if the cop is wrong, which is often. roadside stops are not the place to get in a pizzing contest with the leo.
if he is wrong take it up with the chief later. or hire a lawyer.

a cop stopping you for dark tint, may be especially cautious as he/she cant see you or what your doing.....are you reaching for a weapon or simply adjusting your seat???

where you just driving through an area of known bad guy activity? with dark windows?? if you act like a bad guy because you think its cool, then expect the consequence. think about all the J/A that run around with their pants hanging off their rears looking like a prison biotch... because they think its cool....

we used to live in jacksonville florida, the bad guys drove around in retired police cars they bought at auction, to make matters worse the city license plates for cop cars were YELLOW, florida had a yellow tag that promoted schools. the bad guys opted for the special plates to put on their old police cars, and guess what? they drove around in a manner that made you look twice if it was a cop or not.
was it illegal ? or hoodlum
here folks take off the front license plate and lay on the dash, so folks cant get their number when they are doing gangster like activity....
our police also have light meters to check your tint, during a stop.

so if you driving around and you are knowingly already violating an ordinance, don't be upset if you get a ticket.

that includes speeding, which most of us do....you get caught, be prepared to pay the piper.

if your pulled over and your 100% right....fight it in court
don't argue on the side of the road.... you may just be going to jail for the evening.

everyone should have the right to personalize their ride, but if do it in a manner that is illegal, be prepared for the end result.
