Default Headlight Opinions

Hey y'all. Got a headlight question:

I am looking to get some new headlights on my 2010 F150 XLT. Looking for something a little brighter and safer for the backroads at night. Ideally, I'd like to get some HID lights or something of that nature. I know some people who've got F150s with the stock HIDs and I am a huge fan.

Anyways, is there any possible way I could get some of those HIDs from Ford (or something equally powerful and reliable)? Also, since I have generic/stock reflector headlights currently, will I have to make any other changes to accommodate the new style?

To install oem HID's will require the new headlamp assemblies of course and then you will need a Morimoto harness to interface between your wiring and the hid's, I did this mod my self and it's hands down one of the best mods I have done to my truck.

Are you sitting down? If you get new ones from Ford your looking at better than $1000 just for the light assemblies, then you have to add in bulbs and ballasts as well as the internal harness for each headlight, then a Morimoto harness is about $100.

Do what I did and see if you can find some decent ones on ebay used. I paid right at $1,300.00 for my setup.

Thanks Rnlcomp. You think Ebay is trustworthy for as job like this? Also, do you think it's a possible diy job for an average person? Or is professional help suggested?

It's almost plug-n-play, just have to run a power wire to the battery and ground the harness.

As for ebay, you do have protections in place incase a deal goes sour but it's highly unlikely to happen, just check their feedback.

On used/new lamp assemblies, if they say decontented, they are just the empty housings, no bulbs, no ballasts.

Can I buy the light assembly as well as all of the harnessing and what not? Or will the assembly have to be purchased straight from Ford?

Just look for complete assemblies, that way you get everything you need already installed in the housing, then all you need is the Morimoto conversion harness which can be purchased on this link.

Yup, what he said. I have an '11 Lariat. I did the update in Aug. of '13. Far, far better than the Halogen. I found a new complete set on Ebay that a guy had bought but didn't use. I think I paid around $1,050.00 shipped. Then the adapter harness as stated, and everything was in Lickidy split. And just in case you're not aware, the headlights ('09-'14, Halogen and HID) can only be adjusted up or down, not side to side. Good luck...

I got a new set of the hid projector ford headlights I could sell. We also offer custom headlight service. Really it depends on what style you like best. I see you like the factory look so the set I have might do the trick and I can give you a very good price on them. Whatever cheapest price you find online I will make it better by $100. Hope that helps!

There are plenty of people selling their retrofitted headlights on this forum. I'm sure you could snag some less than 1000 all in.

Whatever you do don't install HID's in a housing you get that was designed for halogen bulbs. They won't work well. If you want to use your existing housings, LED is the way to go. Otherwise if you are looking to upgrade the housing (which is what it sounds like) buy yourself some projector headlights. Then you have the option to use almost any bulb you want (halogen, LED or HID).

Stick with top quality name brands as well for LED/HID and top quality name brands for your housings. You don't want these "ebay special $99.99" housings because they'll leak. Use a housing that has a good warranty and is well known. Same for any other accessories you put in there.

There are some retrofitters on this forum as well who do this for a living so you can get exactly what you want (not sure of the names, but maybe others can give you a few names of retrofitters who have been here a while and are well known/well trusted).

I'm not sure if Raptor Retrofit (Dawson) does earlier trucks, he might.
