When I was about 10 or so I was helping my father swap engines, and I don't mean handing him wrenches. I've got back trouble now and can no longer do brake work or water pumps, but I can smell BS when I have to have something done and it's because of what my father taught me.
Not to get way off off topic but I wish every kid today could have a Gilbert Erector Set - with the DC powered motor. My parents gave me one when I was real little. I didn't know it at the time but it taught me about relationships between angles, geometry, torque, speed, etc. All of this was on an elementary level of course but it made the real deal easier to comprehend later on in life. I built everything in the book and then tossed the book and started making up stuff.
The kit was a choking hazard in a box but I never felt compelled to eat the bolts and screws.
