We pulled a enclosed U-Haul trailer from Ohio to Missouri it with my dads 04 fx4 it was 8k and no brake controller. It pulled great stopped good no problems barley knew it was back there.

^and you needed new brakes after the trip? thats a lot of weight to not be using trailer brakes. And like said to set up, just get it rolling about 10-15 and use the lever/pad on the controller to apply trailer brakes and it should stop both the pickup and trailer. But make sure the gain isn't so high that it grabs when you step on the pedal like normal.
