My 1997 F-150 it has a 5.4 motor will not shift into 4w drive, I was told that I needed a transfer case drive motor, but when replaced was not the problem, the dealer says it needs a Gem modual,@$500.00,I was told there may be a way to erace,the memory with out buying the new part.

Do you have manual or automatic locking hubs? If they are automatic, then the hubs themselves may not be locking and thus the 4x4 will not engage. The vacuum lines can get moisture inside and not allow the hubs to lock. Not sure if the GEM is, or could be the cause of your problem.
