Default Fuel Gauge issue

I have a 2013 ecoboost and I ran out of gas when the miles to empty were around 70. Sometimes I leave my engine running while eating lunch and I thought maybe that threw off the readings so I reset the mpg average. Then a couple weeks later I ran out again around 80 miles showing left. I don't park on an incline/decline and there are no hills that would change it. Not sure what the issue is but any help would appreciated

the motor running idle while parked should not cause the readings to get thrown off. how many miles to empty did it show when you reset the mpg average?

I was out of gas so I put 9 gallons in then reset the mpg. I believe it was around 180 miles to empty.

Why not just fill the tank? I'll never understand I guess....

My tank never gets below 1/2 - when it gets close I fill it.

I think your fuel gauge might work better if you filled it a couple times and don't let it go below 1/4 before filling it again. This just might let the gauge reset itself to a proper reading,.
