Default Forscan security?

In an age of computer viruses and hacking, I’m interested to hear your thoughts about the safety of using Forscan. The Forscan developers don’t charge for it so where’s the catch? Many of our trucks have on board modems and internet. Are we potentially putting our vehicles or safety at risk?

It’s free because it’s in Beta/testing. At some point I would assume the developers will make it a paid product.

I’ve run packet captures while it’s running and it does not communicate with anything on the internet. I’ve also run monitoring against the process and it doesn’t access or manipulate files on a computer outside of what it needs to run.

You still have to have either a physical key that will allow the column cylinder to rotate to the ON position and communicate with PATS or a (new) Intelligent Access key to get Forscan to connect to your vehicle. This is the 1st line of defense against theft/malicious attempts to reprogram the vehicle IMO.

I use a dedicated toughbook for all my Forscan stuff, I don't use it for anything but that. My IDS is on another unit.

I use an Asus 10" laptop convertible for both Forscan and IDS and other automotive related things. My main laptop is a bit large with a 17" screen. Almost bought a Toughbook, couldn't justify the cost.
