ford's sync blows
I have a 2013 5.0L FX4 that I love. One thing I am not fond of is ford's sync. The only thing I can get to work, when it works intermittently is the Bluetooth to make and receive calls. I have a droid razr maxx phone. I have a lot of music on my phone. When I connect my phone via usb I can't get sync to recognize it. What it will say is files are not recognized......so I can't get it to play any music. I thought I would try and put my music on a usb thumb drive and play it that way straight off the usb drive. It recognizes the drive and says sync does not support playback of protected music. This is very frustrating. My gf has a iphone and all of her music has been dl off of itunes. Apparently iTunes puts some sort of protection on their music sync does not like. Sync advertises how versatile it is but I have yet to get it to work. Anyone who can help me to resolve this where I can play my music I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
I have the same phone and everything works fine, hit the speak button and say "Bluetooth Audio" when it bleeps to allow connection just start playback on what ever media player you have on the phone and it'll play thru your system.
P.S. Learn how to use Motocast then you can stream ALL your music even the iTunes music.

I have the exact same phone also (2012 Fx4). Does the text messaging work for you guys ? When I try to reply, it goes right back to MY phone, like it forgot who the original message came from. Sure wish this worked, man...
I found just leaving my iPod connected in the glove box works great. ( You need to hook up a cable to the USB2 port - many threads about it...)

Sync works great with my Samsung GS3 (except for text messaging)
All I do is push the button and say 'bluetooth audio' and the music in my phone starts streaming. No title and artist info on the screen but I just have to use the forward and back buttons on the steering wheel to scroll through songs. I also have a USB drive plugged in and it will show title/artist and also search for songs by voice command. I had a hard time getting it to work also, I just kept hitting PLAY until it worked. It didn't want to recognize the flash drive at first but it finally did.
Once you get it set up, it is really cool!

I also have an issue with 9 times out of 10 it won't even connect to Sync or it'll connect and then within a few seconds it'll disconnect.
Half the time I don't even bother connecting to Sync. Love my truck but feel Sync is more hassle than it's worth.
I admit to using Sync very little and I'm not a texter is likely the reason. I have plugged my phone into the USB to charge it only and that has worked great. I have a 2012 model F-150 and have never updated the software. I guess I should. Until last week I was using a iPhone 3GS and when I upgraded one of my considerations was Sync.
I reasoned that since it was a Microsoft product that a Windows Phone would be absolutely compatible and while I wasn't too worried about a Mainstream Droid (Looked hard at a AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4) there are a confusing amount of Droid OS out there. I am probably wrong, but I associate Droid with Google. I did not want Google because of their petty squabbles with Microsoft that leave the customer in the middle. The customer is always the loser there.
I decided I would go with a Win 8 phone and bought the new Nokia Lumina 1020. It paired up with the pickup without a hitch or hiccup. I have gotten a second Nokia 1020 for my wife (She has not had a cell since '99 or so). True to form she has never had it with her while in the pickup, so I have not tried to pair her phone to sync in the pickup. I'll now make it a point to do that.
Time to find a working thumb drive and download the latest software and update my Pickup.
I've owned the pickup about 15 months and have only put 7,000 miles on it so far. I use an older non-Sync Escape mostly. That really makes me appreciate Sync, when I can't answer the phone. (Yes I have bought several unsatisfactory hands free devices, did I mention UNSATISFACTORY)
Trading vehicles is not really a viable option.
So anyway I have been happy with with My Sync.

My windows phone works great but I have to start media play back first then plug it in. The only reason I plug the phone in is to charge. one thing I like about windows voice text is that it creates a call and uses its own voice text system. so i cannot use the synch text but I can hit the voice text on my phone and it will work thru the bluetooth.
LOL Same thing happens to my Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Whenever I receive a text message it says it's from me and when I reply, it replies to me.

My dealer has a crew of nerds that teach you about Sync and set up your phone for you. The nerds told me to never plug anything into the USB that has a screen on it (like a phone, tablet, ipod touch, etc) because of conflicting operating systems (Sync vs your device). Only thumb drives should be plugged into the USB.
They said that plugging a device into the USB input creates error codes that add up and eventually Sync won't work correctly until it is rebooted. You can reboot it yourself, or the dealer can do it for you. I had been plugging my phone in and it worked fine for a few days, but I had the dealer clear it all out. I only play music via Bluetooth now (from my phone) but I have ordered a USB thumb drive to test that out.
I use an iPhone 4s. The nerds told me that iPhones work best, and that Windows phones and Droids kinda suck with Sync. Ironic that Windows and Sync are both made by Microsoft and they don't play well together...
Sync does kinda suck, but it's got a lot going on.
