My brother has the same truck/yr as I, but just a bit longer bed [1/2 ton]
When he backs-up, his camera intermittently works. When it does not work, the screen looks just like as if it's in Park or Drive. The camera has been replaced, but the same results. When they run the computer, they find nothing - have not been able to recreate at dealer.
Interestingly, regardless of whether he's been driving for 1 min or 2 hrs, then puts in reverse, the same intermittent problem, but then if he immediately stops, puts in in park, then reverse again a second time after it didn't work the first time, the camera has always worked; it never has the intermittent problem when putting in reverse immediately the second time. Somehow this second reverse process is "waking-up" the system to what it should be doing correctly the first time.
Again, there's no rhyme or reason as to when the camera does not work when putting in reverse the first time, but it always works the second immediate time. Has anyone had this problem, then had it fixed to where it never happened again? I sure would appreciate your help. A tech right now is in the process of calling Ford, but to date, no solution.
Well its not the camera or anything else the dealer replaced.
My camera is always on. I know because I connected it to my aftermarket head unit and I can watch it any time I want. So you could temporarily connect a monitor (composite video) to the camera output and see if it is always working.
The camera output goes to the front display interface module or mirror depending on the options. Either one has to 'know' when the transmission is shifted to reverse so it displays the reverse camera. I think that there is a problem where the mirror or the screen do not know the truck is in reverse.
Thanks Feather. The camera is the only thing that has been replaced.
This has been going on since he bought the truck. He, like I, only have the video display next to radio controls, no mirror option. Do you or anyone know "what is the mechanism/device/module/software/etc that "let's the camera know" when it is in reverse?
The whole thing appears to be called the front display interface module. Do you have nav?
I can't find it w/o nav but here is the diagram. Probably partial but shows camera video input. It probably is connected to the comm bus to get transmission shift info.
Note: I did a forum search on this problem, and it seems there's more of a problem w the mirror display going out over time, but not an intermittent problem w the rear-view camera and dash-display. Once the camera works, it works fine - thanks again
