Default Fluid and filter question

Hey fellas,
I've got an 06 f150 4x4 with about 70000 on it, I'm thinkin about changing the trans fluid and filter in case the guy who had it before me never did. Does any one have a rough idea of how many quarts of trans fluid I need before I run to the parts store, do you think i should stay with mercon v or would a full synthetic be better? Any difference in filters that anyone knows of? Oh yeah I would guess my torque convertor has a drain plug, does it not? Thanks in advance

not sure about how much, but you can find out by googling it, but ford recommends that people use mercon in all their transmission applications.

Mercon V is a specification if you want to use synthetic check the bottle to see if it meets the Mercon V standard. I know Castrol has a synthetic transmission fluid which is OK.

See my post HERE
You do not have a drain plug on the torque convertor. I think it was in 01 or 02 Ford did away with them.

Personal preference is to stick with Motorcraft filters, perhaps Wix if they make one for your application.

Suggest it will take about 12-15 quarts for a complete change. Might be a good time to invest in a good shop manual that will list capacities and procedures, if you haven't done so already.

*edit* just read whitecrystal's post - looks to have everything one needs to know!

you are best to go with a transmission flush.just droping the pan and draining the oil wont clean out the torque convertor.

Thanks for the input guys, I have a buddy that works at a tire/auto repair shop. They do flushes and things of that nature, not sure of how much pull he has to get me any kinda discount but looks like I may just go that way.
