Default Finally, son is law is considering a ford

Was absolutely floored, he is looking for a used SUV, most likiely an Expedition. So naturally the 5.4L spark plug issue jumps out at me. Last thing I need after 13 years of boasting about Fords is to advise him incorrectly. What is the year span or engine design to avoid? Any input from fellow members that have the straight scoop is appreciated.

Any Expedition 2004 and newer is fine. There are some issues with knocking noises but it happens in very few 5.4L and is only a sound nuisance and not a real mechanical issue. Also the spark plug issue was fixed in 2004. So if you test drive an Expedition pay attn to any knocking sounds. Also FYI - Ford Expedition improved greatly after 2003 but I would recommend a year after, thus 2004 if you are buying used.

Besides that do the usual. Check the Car Fax, get low miles (if possible), avoid any modified engines, make sure all of the lights and buttons work, and buy from a reputable dealer or have a trusted mechanic check out the SUV before buying it.

No. Any 3 valve built until late 07 will have the same problem with the spark plugs breaking. Doesn't matter if it's in a F-150, Expedition, Mustang, or Super Duty...

Thanks for the replies, so its the 3 valve head to stay clear off? What are the other options?

I would still buy a Ford knowing about the spark plugs. It's not that hard to correct.
