F150 vs Ranger
I am in highschool right now and looking for a truck it would be mostly city driving and I was either looking at the 4.6L v8 and the 4.0L v6 I want to have a ford but it needs to be good on gas plus offroad when me and my friends head to the field. Thanks.
You won't be able to find one that is good on gas that has a V8 and 4X4 for off road. The 2011s V8 4X4 offer 14/19, but previous model years are worse. Rangers are just too small, which is why I would go with a F-150.
Neither of those trucks will be good on gas.
My '99 ranger used to get around 16 mpg with about 50-50 city/highway. Better than the 4.6 V8's do but not by much!
FYI I looked at EPA widow stickers when I was shopping for my truck. The EPA rating for a 4.0 Ranger was the same as a Raptor....

In simple terms, one fill up on the lowest octane will be approximately $100. Could be $10 less or $10 more. Being in high school you'll need to fill up perhaps 2 or 3 times a month. Make sure there's money left over for fun!

I guess it really just depends on how much you drive. Where I grew up, Rangers were more expensive than F150s, so everyone either had a Mazda B-series or an F150 if they went the Ford route. In high school, a tank would typically last me four or five days but I also lived more than 20 miles from school and didn't just go to school and back. Now I'm in college, a tank is getting me about a week's worth of use still. If it's a regular week over the summer, I'll hit 2000 miles in four days which is about 5 tanks...
I own both and love both and honestly its a toss up, I needed a bigger cab for hauling my family around and my F-150 gets the same mileage that my 4.0 Ranger gets so mileage is a wash. My Ranger, even in stock form will wheel circles around my F-150 though and is just plain more fun to drive but my F-150 has more room in the cab and it handles much better on the road and is more comfortable. I can say one thing about the Rangers though, they are tough little trucks that are cheap to own and are reliable. Ive owned 4 of them.
