2nd As I have said before automatics and manual transmissions both have their pros and cons. It's a matter of preference.

The problem that I see is:
1. Who ever is pushing automatics, they are working for the parts manufacturer for the automatic transmissions and do not want to loose their job
2. They are mechanics and know if manual transmissions come back out, they will loose lots money. Due to a lot more maintenance cost associated with an automatic. Such as filter and fluid changes, sensors/computer components going out and/or issues with them, even just to hook it up to the computer and run diagnostics.
3. You (engineer/designer) get a kick back on every automatic transmission that goes out the door.

You tell me that an automatic can pull more than a manual. You must be a car salesman, you don't have a clue. A salesman will lie, cheat and still for his commission. Your not an IDIOT your a MORON. I have pulled 3 - 1/2 tons with my 97' F-150 4.6 4x4 5 speed manual with no problems. I just had to replace my clutch after 234k miles. Which most people only get 160k - 180k miles. With 2 fluid changes. One at 75k and the other at 160k.

It's the yuppies that are giving the problem for automatics. They want to shove an automatic down our throat. Well I'm shoving a manual down theirs. Just because you can't drive a stick, doesn't mean that everyone has to have an automatic.
If its about money. Send me a survey "A good survey, not a BS survey. One with ball park figures on pricing". You have the computer, just reprogram the one you have "take out the monitoring/sensing for the automatics". But, you really don't need a computer for a manual. Unless you want the Moron that's driving to know what gear he is in by placing a number on the dashboard that says gear. Now that was the 80's. All you need is the gear box and bell housing and maybe a little refacing on the two. I'm sorry, you cannot tell me that you do not have a manual trans that will work in a F150. Using the same materials (metal grade) that is used for the gears in the automatics and the type of metal grade for the casing and that will be strong enough for the manual transmission. But that makes too much sense.
Manual transmissions are not becoming obsolete because you still find them in economy cars. So they are not obsolete. They are becoming obsolete in full size trucks, because yuppies don't want to drive full size trucks with a stick. Because mommy didn't teach them to drive a stick. All they want is the status of driving a full size truck. Which most of them will never see the off road, much less a dirt road. So that defeats the trucks intended purpose and uses. Like a teenager/20 year old, parents buying a new $50k F150, then let them take it rock climbing and 4 wheel driving. "Intended purposes and uses". Yea Right!!!!!

150's should have the 4.6 and the 5.0 with automatic or a manual
250's should be a 5.4 and a 5.7 with an automatic or a manual or a diesel
350's should be a 6.0 and what ever from there with automatic or a manual or a diesel

150's are the weekend warriors/daily commute truck. If you need more than that, go to a 250 and more than that, 350. Most people choose the 150. Because that is all they need.

If the F150's keep getting bigger engines, then the F100's needs to come back, sharing the same frame and body of the 150's. For some of us a 5.4 and 5.7 is just way too much for a daily commute and a weekend warrior. The 4.6 works great.

The ECOBOOST engine is great. However it still gives the same gas mileage as the 5.7. So, tell me where the fuel savings are. Only thing that the ecooboost has proven is we can get a lot more horse power out of a V6. Which is excellent. To be honest, I love the ecoboost 3.5. The gas mileage sux for a V6.

Also manual transmissions can and will out perform automatics. However, they are very close and the only way they can get close is all the sensors' and vacuum lines and a computer control/monitoring system for the transmission. Now, that's a lot of work for an automatic to keep up. With a manual trans. That's sad, very sad.

And for Buck!!! I honestly believe that you are an engineer of the automatic transmissions. Because you are defending the auto trans with everything you've got.
Well Buck I'm very happy for you in crossing over to the automatics. Life is so much easier for you, now. Your a hell-of-a-man to cross over. I hope the automatics server you well. I guess your getting too old to roll through the gears anymore. So I see you have stepped down and letting the younger bucks roll through the gears.
We can both have our transmissions. You can have your automatic and I can have my manual. Manual transmissions are so inexpensive compared to automatics. If they figure that only 10% of the sales will be manuals. Then manufacture 12% and keep the other 2% as ready spears. In the big scheme of things that is, NOTHING!!
I'm all for technology, in most things. However, this is one thing that I am very old school about. BECAUSE THEY WORK!!

Also, it appears that Obama (socialist) has placed a mandate behind the scenes that all manufactures are not allowed to sell manual transmissions with a full size truck any more. "Socialist &@$+@*%$".

Socialism is = your options are an automatic, an automatic or an automatic.
USA used to stand for choice of an automatic or a manual.

What the hell happen. This is not what I served my country "USA" for.

You're right! USA did used to stand for Choice! I can't remember which constitutional right it is but I believe it states "The right of Automatic or manual transmissions for everyone!" As stated word for word in the U.S. Constitution! MERICA!

I can't believe we are now talking about manual vs automatic transmissions in the same sentence as socialism and Obama and the apparent rights that the manual transmission has lost in this country
Keep fighting Taaada! Maybe eventually manual transmissions will earn equal rights within our country as the autos have. Fight for the cause!

I might add this for taada, the manual transmissions that Ford had in their prior trucks was not American either. The Ranger and F-150 had Mazda (Japan) transmissions and the F-250 up had ZF (Germany) transmissions. Also I remember when the T-Bird got redesigned back in 1989, they did away with manual window option. The rep mentioned the reasoning for it was the demand for manual windows were low and it would cost Ford more money to operate 2 assembly lines (one for manual window equipped cars and one for power window cars). As for saying it's because of socialism, look at every socialist country. Their cars and trucks built in those countries have a manual transmission option. I do wonder in years to come if they will build a transmission like they have in the new Focus and Fiesta. Dual clutch automatic with gears instead of friction and steel plates. I know they have some problems now, but what if they get rid of the bugs. Sorry for the long post.

I think they look good, they aren't that carlike. sure, a bit, but I think they look good either way. i admit i do like the 04-08 a bit better though. the reason they did make them more boxy for '04 was supposed to be consumer complaints about car-likeness though.

current gen is nice, however not as good as it could be...IMO...and IMO, if recent "spy photos" are anything close to the real thing, it's been proven.

I like what i see in the spy photos though, hope that is really gen 13 f-series .

I find the girls truck thing offensively comical. it's looks don't make it a girls or guys truck, the owner's gender does.....

Could it be that the reason Ford went with all autos in the F-150 is that the orders for manuals fell below profitability.

Nah, it probably was Obama's idea.

Regardless of which type of transmission is better, Ford is not going to put manuals back into their full size trucks. There. End of discussion! You guys are welcome.
