I have a new 2011 on order, but this question is about earlier models. I have a coworker looking for a used F150. He drives a 400+ commute to work each week. Should he get a 4.6 or a 5.4. I'm a Ford newbie and can't offer very good advice.

It really depends what other activities your coworker will be doing with the truck and the type of driving. If your coworker tows anything substantial, the 5.4L will be a better investment. The 4.6L is good for daily driving and some light towing. Out in Colorado, you probably have some "hills" where more power would be a necessity. The 4.6L is suppose to get better mileage, but that varies by truck. On the highway, both motors will be within 1-2 mpg of each other. Maintenance and the past history of the truck is really of value.

both are very good motors. i drive 600 miles per week and i have the 5.4. but there is periods where ill pull a lot. if i never pulled anything a 4.6 would be perfect. i get 18mpg with mine but i baby it. a 4.6 2wd will get just as good if not better

I have no complaints out of my 97 f150 4.6 4x4 XLT. I drove it 600+ mile communte every week for 6 months in Tulsa,Ok. i had stock tires all highway i got about 21-23 mpg out of it. I didnt pull much while i was down there either a few scrap metal runs a car once or twice but thats about it. I played on oologah lake alot with my AT tires i had at the time.

For mileage I really like my 4.6 in my '06 2wd. My '96 4wd has a 5.8 in it and does much worse on fuel, but it will tow anything I need to.I just got the '06 a short while ago and have yet to hook my boat to it, but I think it will do just fine. My boat is an 18' ski boat and is only about 3500 lbs but when full of gas and camping stuff, it goes about 4000. If a guy doesn't beat the crap out of his truck, it'll do anything that's asked of it lol.

And the 3 valve is even better than the 2 valve as far as HP and TQ.

Don't know mileage difference between the two.
