Default engine transmision swap

I have a 1987 f-150 with a 4.9 and a 3 speed overdrive. I want to install a 4.6 or a 5.4 with auto trans from later model (2000 or newer). I,m looking for any suggestions.

Default Not Very Encouraging:

The tranny you can retrofit to your ride, but the engine is another matter. The year you are looking at employs the EEC-V/OBD2 electronic control system. Your truck uses an older version of EEC-X/OBD1 and the two are incompatible.

As far as I know, you will need a complete engine harness assembly and PCM from the newer version to transfer to your older ride. It can be done, but the task is daunting....and you need an electrical expert to give you a hand!
