Engine Hesitation After Start-Up

Default Engine Hesitation After Start-Up

I'm a new Ford owner. I just purchased a 2010 F150 XLT with 5.4L engine. I've only had for about 3 weeks. I'm noticing a engine hesitation at start-up, mainly when the engine is cold. This happened again today as I pulled out into traffic when pulling out of a lot this afternoon. Traffic was approaching and I gave it some throttle to get up to speed. The truck did not down shift or excel. It was flat and the engine was hesitating. Almost like a spuddering. After the truck runs for 4 or 5 miles, I tried it again and without hesitation, the truck delivers more than adequate power. It only seems to hesitate when the engine is cold. I'm curious if any other 2010 owners have experienced any problems. I don't like the thought of letting it warm up for 5 minutes prior to driving. I plan to take into the dealer and let them test it after sitting for a few hours. Maybe their diagnostic equipment can give a good read. If anyone else has encountered such issues, I would appreciate and info so I can share with the dealer. Thanks! Brownboy (A Ford Rookie)

might be somthing big but to me it just sounds like a cold engine. mines a little like that but it only takes a min or two of driving to clear it up. i ussually let it warm up for 2 min to.

I had a '96 that did something similar. Turned out to be a sensor that monitors engine temp and adjusts the fuel/air mixture when the engine is cold.

Angry 2010 5.4 sputtering at start up

Same problem after repair was done......
I had my check engine light on earlier this fall and had trouble getting the problem diagnosed and fixed. It was showing a lean code on both banks at which point the plugs were swapped out. Then the vacuum lines were checked and fuel pump/pressure was checked. All showed no problems and numbers were in the parameters. Light still on. Second mech advised that it was the purge canister and after it was swapped out, the code was cleared and check light gone..........Since that purge canister was swapped out, the truck has been sputtering on cold starts, winds up to 1600RPM and stays there for 20 secs before idling down to 800. After putting it into gear, taking my foot off the brake and coasting without touching the gas pedal, the engine will rev to almost 2000RPM and surge the truck forward. Taking it in to get this issue resolved now. There were no start-up issues, performance issues, or surges prior to this canister being changed, even when the lean code was thrown. I'll see was the Ford mech has to say now.

Regarding hesitation ...
  • let the engine warm-up for a minute or 2.
  • try cleaning the MAF sensor
  • inspect the throttle body for carbon build-up and clean if found.
  • check the condition of the air filter.

Dear friend
I am faced with such problem with my 2010 Toyota 4Runner.
As I scan, no any code.
I replaced the fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, I cleaned the trotel body, I sprayed at the mas air flow sensor, I washed all injectors with special spray, I washed the oxygen sensors...
but still the issue is excited.
