Default Engine coolant

I drained my rad at the petcock, took out the plug in the engine block and only got about 2.5 gallons of liquid from both. The book says it takes about 4 gallons , 50/50 mix. I can only get 2.5 gallons in the whole system. Even with engine running and heater on. Any ideas? Maybe thermostat is not opening. Gauge reads about half way, in the middle after it's been running a while.

What year is the truck? On Modular engines 97+ trucks, there is two block drains, one is behind the engine mount on the right side. Make sure you have the Degas/rad Cap off when draining.

It's A 2009 , 5.4 triton . Found the plug on drivers side, can't find the plug on passengers side. I also noticed before I even started to flush and add new coolant, that my gauge was reading in the middle. A little too hot. Not overheating at all. Just hotter than normal. Changed the thermostat, gauge is reading the same. Any ideas? No leaks around water pump. Hope water pump isn't getting ready to go.
